Mattel, Barbie & The White Washing Of Frida Kahlo


To celebrate International Women’s Day this year Barbie’s manufacturer Mattel Inc., decided to dropped their latest line of dolls they’re calling “Inspiring Women.”

The line includes tributes to the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart, NASA research mathematician Katherine Johnson and iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo…but not everyone is pleased with Mattel’s designer depiction of these iconic women.

Hollywood Pimps Inclusivity At The Oscars With The Inclusion Rider But What Is It?

Hollywood does this fun trick where it picks and chooses from popular forward thinking topics so that it looks like it isn’t run exclusively by white men and (some) women. Which is why this years 90th Annual Academy Awards ceremony was so interesting. It was an awards show poised as both an apology for not only an industry that exhibits exclusionary behavior buy predatory too.

To offset everything the #MeToo movement brought up this years Oscars tried to prove Hollywood is finally woke, dammit. And to set this message home, many of Hollywood’s biggest names came forth with a variety of messages. One of the biggest messages sent was by Frances McDormand at the end of her acceptance speech for best actress in “3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” with a mic drop that not everyone understood:

“We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Invite us into your office in a couple of days, or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best, and we’ll tell you all about them. have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: Inclusion rider.”

Now It’s Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men…In Iceland

Even though there’s still many struggles for women globally, Iceland continues moving in a direction to ensure the equality of women and men.

The Nordic country rolled out a new law that says it’s illegal for women to be paid less than men for doing the same job.

The new Icelandic law is now in place to make gender equality apart of the ever day life in Iceland. Yay!

The Reality of the Wage Gap in America

A couple of days ago I posted an infographic on Instagram that broke down the wages of varying ethnicities and genders in the United States in comparison to white men. The reactions to it were expected. A bunch of angry white men leaving angry comments about the wage gap being a myth and a bunch of questions asking about the validity of the infographic. When I started to investigate the validity of said graphic and found that the information in it was true from this 2016 article in the Washington Post about a study from the Pew Research Center  that reported on how Americans are paid based on race and gender.
